Mandilari or Mandilaria is considered the king of Crete, but rarely is it seen in monovarietal vinifications. This is a rare occasion of just that. In the hands of organic growers and indigenous Cretan varieties devotees, father and son team of Yannis and Yorgos Stilianou, mountainous Mandilari on steep slopes reaches optimal phenolic ripeness, and is vinified into a light red with only a day of maceration, giving us a more approachable expression of the variety. Even as a light red, it still shows the beast that it is with leather and tobacco lurking in the background. One of the most individual and very Greek wines of the country.
